A push is underway to build a new lock at Sault Sainte Marie. A bipartisan group of Great Lakes senators is urging the Army Corps of Engineers to reevaluate the benefit-cost ratio of replacing the aging Poe Lock. The Poe was built in 1968. It’s the only lock that can handle largest Great Lakes freighters… and is in need of major repairs and upgrades. The Corps’ initial evaluation showed that it wouldn’t be cost-efficient to replace the lock. The group of senators is asking the Corps to revisit that evaluation. In the meantime, the Corps is proceeding with repairs on the Poe. (Todd VanDyke)
