Senate Will Hold Hearings On Grand Rapids Home For Veterans

State lawmakers are going to take a closer look at issues at the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans in the wake of troubling findings by the state auditor general.

An audit released Friday found the facility failed to properly keep track of its residents or its nonnarcotic drugs, did not meet staffing requirements and failed to adequately respond to complaints of abuse and neglect.

State Senator Margaret O’Brien chairs the chamber’s Veterans, Military Affairs and Homeland Security committee. She says her committee will hold hearings on the veterans’ home.

She says now that the auditor general has identified the causes of the problems, they won’t be satisfied until the state’s veterans receive the proper care and treatment they deserve.

The Senate Oversight Committee will also hold hearings on the issue.
