Senate Putting Off Vote On $1.2 Billion House Plan To Fix Roads

A vote in the Senate on a $1.2 billion House plan to fix the roads won’t likely happen until next week.

The proposal includes using $600 million from the general fund and gets the rest from diesel and gas tax increases and a $40 hike, on average, to vehicle registration fees.

Amber McCann, a spokeswoman for the Senate majority leader, says registration fees continue to be a hang up.

She says she’s not sure whether the upper-chamber will change to plan to shift the weight from registration fees to the gas tax, but the consensus in the Senate is the fee increase is too high.

Senate leaders spent much of the day Tuesday gauging where members of the Republican-led chamber were at on the House plan, but never voted on the bill package.

McCann says the earliest they would vote is next week.

Senate Democrats say they won’t support the House plan, so the Senate will have to line up Republican members to advance the roads solution.
