The state Senate Tuesday passed a plan to restructure the Detroit Public School district.
The $715 million plan would break the district in two, pay off its debt, and transition from state emergency management to an elected school board.
However, a board of state appointees would still oversee the district’s finances.
The plan also would form an education commission that would manage the opening and closings of schools.
Members of the committee would be appointed by Detroit’s mayor.
The plan now heads to the House for consideration.
