Senate Passes Bill to Protect Student Online Information

The state Senate passed a bill designed to protect student information from being misused.

The measure creates the Student Online Personal Protection Act, which bans operators of websites or mobile applications that are knowingly used for K-12 school purposes from selling student information or engaging in targeted advertising.

Bill sponsor, Senator Phil Pavlov, says all schools are now using some kind of online education, he wants to make sure those educational portals are used to further education rather than a place to mine data.

He says the goal is to ensure that all the data being collected, whether it be testing data or behavioral information, is protected.

The bill now goes to the House.
