Senate Majority Leader Wants More Money for Roads

The Michigan Senate Majority Leader says he’s working on a plan to increase road funding by between $1.3 billion and $1.5 billion. Senate Republican Leader Randy Richardville says he wants to build on House-approved legislation that would replace the state’s gas tax with a 6% tax on the wholesale price of fuel, which could rise or fall with inflation. Richardville says he’s gauging whether there’s support for a gradual increase in fuel taxes, potentially doubling the wholesale rate over several years to generate most of the extra money. The Senate leader also says additional revenue could be generated by eliminating an annual 10% reduction in vehicle value used to calculate registration fees.
