Senate Committee Could Wrap Up Hearing On DPS Plan This Week

A state Senate committee could be ready to move bills this week to reorganize Detroit Public Schools.

The Senate Oversight Committee has listened to weeks of testimony on the Senate plan to overhaul DPS and dig the district out of debt.

Senate Majority Leader Arlan Meekhof chairs that committee.

He says they could wrap up testimony on the bill package this week.

The next step would be a vote to send it to the full chamber for consideration.

Meanwhile, the state House has put together its own plan for DPS.

Meekhof wouldn’t say whether the Senate was willing to integrate some of the House proposals into the Senate plan, adding that his chamber is currently just focused on what they can get done.

Both plans would break the district in two and would cost $715 million.

However, the House plan would strip away some collective bargaining rights of teachers.
