Beginning this week, Secretary of State branches will be open until 7:00 PM Wednesday evenings. Jocelyn Benson says that the change will help customers who have work and other time commitments during traditional business hours.
Booking an appointment will still be done online, but you are welcome to stop by as a walk-in, where you will be helped immediately if possible, or assisted in scheduling for a later date. The move comes a year out from election day, and several of Benson’s potential opponents, including Upper Peninsula native Beau LaFave, are making office availability a central theme of their campaigns.
In the immediate aftermath of closures related to the pandemic, a crush of people looking to do license renewals and other business that requires an in-person visit to the Secretary of State were left unable to find an available slot. Some branches had appointments completely booked for over three months at a time. Waits like that have not been seen in Houghton County.
