Michigan’s secretary of state says linking the elimination of straight ticket voting to no-reason absentee voting might be a good idea.
A bill moving through the state legislature would drop the straight ticket checkoff box from the Michigan ballot, but local and county clerks say the change will increase wait times at the polls.
Secretary of State Ruth Johnson says a good solution to help shorten those voting lines would be allowing no-reason absentee.
She says, if straight ticket voting is scratched off the ballot, it’s her office’s job to implement it while also keeping the lines down.
Supporters of straight ticket voting say people should take the time to know the candidates and vote on their merit, not their party affiliation.
