School Bus Requirement Awaits Data Analysis

A pilot program to see if lighting up the words, “Stop Do Not Pass,” on the back of a school bus prevents people from passing a stopped bus wrapped up Friday. 10 school districts across the state took part.

The program is State Representative Holly Hughes idea. She hopes the data will show the lights work and that all school buses in the state should have them.

Bus drivers in the 10 districts spent October logging how many people passed their bus when they didn’t have the lights and after the lights were installed.

Hughes has introduced a bill requiring school buses to have the lights. She’s waiting for the data to come in and be analyzed before the bill is heard in a House committee.

The districts taking part in the pilot program include: Ravenna, Traverse City, Zeeland, Forest Hills, West Ottawa, Lansing, Mason, Saginaw Township, Novi and Van Buren County ISD.
