Rumble Strips Credited With Saving Lives

A new study shows that rumble strips on centerlines and along the edge of roads are saving lives in Michigan.

Wayne State University researchers say the strips on 5,700 miles of two-lane high-speed roads since 2008 have led to 337 fewer crashes, 16 fewer deaths and prevented 62 more serious injuries each year.

They also estimate a total cost savings of more than $79 million over three years.

Researchers says future rumble strip studies hope to focus on two-lane county roads and multi-lane non-freeway high speed roads.
