A rock is not just a rock. In the Keweenaw, our heritage is based on the area’s geology, although there is more to these stones than “poor rock” and “mine rock”.
Some truly epic events happened in the Keweenaw millions and even billions of years ago—and we can learn their stories by, well, looking at rocks.
During the next two weeks, Michigan Tech researchers will guide local and visiting rock hounds on two rounds of four one-day field trips around the Keweenaw Peninsula.
Several of the field trips will tour on the Michigan Tech research vessel Agassiz, visiting many sites, from Jacobsville sandstone outcrops in Rabbit Bay to the world’s largest Greenstone Lava Flow outside Copper Harbor to mine waste in Torch Lake.
