Roadside parks closing next week

The Michigan Department of Transportation announced the closing dates for seasonal roadside parks. It is customary that they shutter for winter in late October before reopening the following April. A warm month won’t change that too much. Except for one rest area on I-75 in the eastern Upper Peninsula, all locations will cease operations on Tuesday, October 26th.

There are three parks on M-26 in northern Keweenaw County between Eagle River and Copper Harbor. Houghton County has two between the airport and the Portage Lake Lift Bridge in Hancock. There are four in Baraga County from the Village of Baraga to Michigamme.

The closures occur due to reduced use and the resulting safety concerns that arise under such scenarios.
