Roads and rinks focus of Monday’s L’Anse council meeting

Two bumpy streets in L’Anse are a big step closer to being repaved. At last night’s council meeting, village manager Bob LaFave said state officials have signed the request for a grant to help resurface L’Anse Avenue and Baraga Avenue.

To get $245,000 to help us get that important street worked on is certainly a great shot in the arm and will certainly help us get those roads into great condition very soon.

The village was about to repave L’Anse Avenue completely on its own last fall, when the prospect of the grant became available. The extra money will allow work to be done on Baraga Avenue as well.

Council members expressed their appreciation for the work that has been done to improve Meadowbrook Arena. Kerrie Sikkila said upgrades to the kitchen in the concession area have been completed.

Been a lot of hard work put in down there. Now we’re looking into getting with the health department to see where we stand as far as opening goes.

Meadowbrook is owned by the village, but is self-supporting, and depends on user fees and fundraisers to meet expenses. Village President Ron Ervast thanked the volunteers who keep it running.

My hat goes off to all the people that are volunteering down there. It takes a lot to make that happen.

The concession stand upgrade comes on the heels of improvement to the rest rooms, which made them compliant with the American with Disabilities Act.
