Road Side Drug Testing Introduced

Michigan State Police will soon be able to conduct roadside drug tests similar to what they do with drunk drivers.

A State Police spokeswoman says the one-year pilot program will be set up in five counties.

Specially-trained Drug Recognition Experts will be able to use saliva-based testing to check drivers to see if they’ve smoked marijuana or used heroin or cocaine.

The hope is the program will begin later this year.

Lawmakers approved the legislation earlier this year.
