Residents Voice Support For Curbside Recycling In Houghton

Curbside recycling is closer to becoming a reality in Houghton.

At the regular meeting of the city council Wednesday, several residents voiced their support for city to provide the service as it considers bids to replace the expiring trash pickup contract.

One group of Michigan Tech students presented a petition of 500 signatures calling for more recycling and others urged the council to push for a more comprehensive recycling program.

City Manager Eric Waara says the requests for proposals required trash pick with curbside recycling.

Three bids have been received, two of which fit the criteria of the RFP but there’s a third alternative plan that would look at recycling county wide.

Evan McDonald from Copper Country Recycling Initiative asked that the council hold off on making their decision so that the third option could be discussed.

Waara said that plan would require several municipalities to be on board.

Waara says the council plans on settling on a bid at their May 11th meeting.

The current trash pickup contract expires June 30th.
