Research Continues Into Sunken Steam Barge

A steam barge that sank in Lake Huron near Alpena more than 100 years ago, the W. P. Thew, is being studied by researchers and students from East Carolina University.

They have made several dives to the wreck to learn more about the single propeller steam barges used to carry lumber and coal.

The barge sank in 1909 after it was hit by the William Livingston freighter.
