Some major road repaving could be done in Houghton soon.
This would include a 1500 foot stretch of Razorback Drive from 400 feet south of Sharon Avenue to the intersection at Cedar Street, 3600 feet of East Sharon Avenue from Garnet to the Student Development Complex, and 2100 feet of Seventh Avenue from Franklin Street to the approach at Garnet Street.
At Wednesday’s regular meeting, City Manager Eric Waara laid out a proposal to the city council that the city obtain a 15 year bond from the USDA that would allow all the paving to be done in one year.
The total cost of the project will top $600,000, an amount the city could not possibly afford to do in a short time frame.
By doing all the work at once, the city will also be saving money in the long term.
The council voted to allow the mayor to sign the application for the bond.
In other business, newcomer to the city council, John Sullivan, was present when the council heard the summary of an extensive audit report of the city’s finances.
According to the report, the city’s net assets increased from 2014 to 2015 and its assets versus liabilities increased by four percent in that time frame.
Waara said that means the city is healthy and growing.
The full audit report is expected to be posted on the City of Houghton’s website.
