As state lawmakers weigh changes to the state’s medical marijuana law, law enforcement officials are advocating more regulation of transporting the drug.
Legislation in Lansing is aimed at regulating the state’s medical marijuana industry by allowing for dispensaries, taxing them and creating a seed to sale tracking system.
The bill package would also create a licensing system for transporters of medical marijuana.
Sergeant Amy Dehner of the Michigan State Police says that transportation should end at the point of sale, so there is no delivery from the dispensary to someone’s home.
She says what they want to avoid is private delivery services bringing the drug directly to patients or caregivers.
Dehner says state police would like to see a transportation model that includes a secure transport industry with unmarked trucks to avoid making them a target.
The medical marijuana legislation is in a Senate committee.
