Record For Ice On Great Lakes Impending

A record could be set this weekend for ice coverage on the Great Lakes.

The five lakes were 84.4% covered by ice as of Sunday, and more bitter cold air has already moved into the area.

MLive.com chief meteorologist Mark Torregrossa says it’s a possibility that the lakes could surpass the 1979 record of 94.7% ice coverage if winds on Lake Michigan today don’t kick up too much and break up some of the ice.

Torregrossa adds that the high percentage of ice on the lakes will likely result in a cooler than normal summer, and a late arrival for spring.
