A liberal advocacy group is attempting to block Governor Rick Snyder from using state taxpayer dollars for his legal defense related to the Flint water crisis.
The State Administrative Board is set to consider the governor’s request, next week, for $1.2 million to pay lawyers for their work connected to Flint’s water issues.
But Progress Michigan says that money should come from Snyder’s pocket and they’ve filed a complaint with the Secretary of State because the governor hasn’t created a fund to pay for those legal costs.
Progress Michigan lawyer, Mark Brewer, says it’s unprecedented what the governor is doing.
Brewer says the state has never paid a private law firm to defend an elected official against a criminal investigation.
The group’s executive director, Lonnie Scott, says he hopes the State Administrative Board will reject the governor’s request.
