Pro-Life And Pro-Choice Activists Square Off In A House Committee Hearing

Pro-life and pro-choice activists squared off in a House committee hearing over a bill to prohibit state funding of abortion providers such as Planned Parenthood.

Ed Rivet of Right to Life of Michigan told lawmakers on the House Appropriations Committee every day three classrooms worth of kids are aborted every day in Michigan.

But Lori Carpentier, of Planned Parenthood Michigan, asked if lawmakers were sure they really wanted to cut off future funding to the organization.

She says there could be a day that Planned Parenthood could step in and provide prenatal care to an underserved area of the state, but then couldn’t get state funding to do it.

Planned Parenthood hasn’t received state funding since 2004 and the state hasn’t made money available for abortions since the mid 80’s.

The legislation wasn’t voted on during the hearing and the chairman of the committee wouldn’t commit to calling the bill for a vote in the future.
