Prez Candidates on Mack Island Past and Present

At least six Republican presidential hopefuls will be on Mackinac Island later this week for a Republican Leadership Conference.

The idea of presidential candidates being on the island is hardly news however.

A longtime island resident and former Mackinac Island Park Commission chairman says John F. Kennedy used an island visit 55 summers ago to lock up the nomination for president.

Dennis Cawthorne says Kennedy was gaining momentum, but needed the endorsement of Michigan Governor G. Mennen Williams.

Kennedy traveled to Mackinac, and a meeting between the two resulted in a key endorsement for J.F.K. Cawthorne says that virtually sewed up the nomination for Kennedy.

Scheduled for the island event this coming weekend are: U-S Senator Rand Paul, Former Florida Governor Jeb Bush, U-S Senator Ted Cruz, Former Hewlett Packard CEO Carly Fiorina, Ohio Governor John Kasich and Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker.
