Prevailing Wage Law Debate Set To Begin

The Michigan Senate is set to become “Ground Central” for the prevailing wage debate next week.

Senate Majority Leader Arlan Meekhof says a bill to repeal the state’s prevailing wage act, which requires contractors to pay union wages and benefits to workers on government funded projects, will go before a Senate committee.

He says it’s not fair for taxpayers to have to pay more for building projects.

The governor doesn’t support repealing the act but Meekhof says a number of his members do, so he’s going to move the bill.

Labor organizations and many Democrats have opposed repealing the prevailing wage law in Michigan. Senate Democrat Jim Ananich of Flint says the proposal “hurts working families that are already struggling.”
