Preparing for Cold Temperatures

The Michigan State Police say that if you have to leave your home today, make sure you dress in layers in preparation for the cold temperatures. Health experts say the most important thing to remember is to protect all exposed skin, and realize that frostbite and hypothermia are painless health threats, but that those types of cold injuries can include vascular and some nerve damage. If that happens the recommendation is that the affected skin should be kept clean and free of infection, and the problem should go away by itself within a week. Houghton County Emergency Measures Director Jack Duewke says there are certain things you should have in your home when temperatures get this cold.
