Power Restored in Rural Houghton County

More than 1300 UPPCO customers are breathing a sigh of relief after a lengthy power outage yesterday left them in the dark and without heat for almost nine hours. The outage effected almost 90 percent of communities in Ahmeek, Allouez, Copper City, Kearsarge, Mohawk and New Allouez and was caused by a broken power pole crossarm in Houghton County. The site of the problem was so remote that UPPCO personnel had to use snowmobiles to reach it safely. The outage occurred shortly after 3:00 a.m. but UPPCO was able to restore power around noon. The company apologizes for any inconvenience.
