Portage Health Auxiliary Awards Scholarships

The Portage Health Auxiliary has awarded ten $1,000 scholarships to students in medical programs at post-secondary institutions. The scholarship recipients were recognized at UP Health System – Portage’s annual Volunteer Recognition Dinner at the Shelden Grill on Tuesday, May 10.

The Auxiliary Scholarship Committee had 25 applications for the scholarships this year. Applicants must have completed at least one year of higher education, be a registered resident of Houghton, Keweenaw, Baraga or Ontonagon County and have a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

“This is just one way that the Auxiliary gives back to our community,” said Joanne Edwards, the chairperson of the committee. “These scholarships will help students obtain degrees in health careers and hopefully serve our local community in the future.”

The healthcare education scholarships are funded from revenue raised in the Auxiliary’s annual Lights of Love Christmas tree ornament sales.
