The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is encouraging people to get out of the house and enjoy the outdoors. The DNR is offering a couple of free winter programs at Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park including a Lantern Lit ski and Snowshoe Trail and a guided Snowshoe Hike.
The lit trail features a one mile loop for snowshoe hikers and cross country skiers to experience the evening woods illuminated by nearly 80 old style kerosene lanterns… with refreshments and a camp fire near the halfway point for warming.
That event begins this Friday and Saturday at 6:00pm and continues for two weekends each month into February.
Day time activities are also offered. Beginning in mid January the park will begin guided snowshoe tours where hikers will ride the chair lift to the top, then begin the two hour hike to the bottom, stopping at the East Vista for sight seeing and picture taking. Guided Snow Shoe tours begin on January 13th at 1 pm.
