Plea Agreement In The Works In Laplander Case

The trial against 36-year-old Isaac Laplander will not begin in a couple of weeks as scheduled.

The Calumet man was set to face a jury trial starting on January 6th.

Instead, he is expected to plea that day in accordance with a plea agreement that is in the works.

Houghton County Prosecutor Michael Makinen said they have reached the outlines of that agreement but the terms are dependent upon a third party that is out of their control.

Laplander was out on bond in April following a break-in at a Calumet Auto Parts store.

It was then that police say he stole a sport scar from a Calumet dealership and was later arrested in Wisconsin.

That dealership has since changed ownership which has contributed to the delay in resolving the case.

Laplander waived his right to a trial within 180 days after being charged so the matter can be sorted out.
