Legislation aimed at protecting the environment from a ruptured oil pipeline has been signed into law by President Obama.
Michigan Senator Gary Peters was among those who were pushing for the tougher safety measures and stricter oversight of the pipelines.
Peters says the law will help ensure a spill does not happen in the Great Lakes.
The law also requires that the possibility of ice cover being included in any clean up plan and calls for an independent study of the country’s aging pipelines.
Enbridge’s Line 5 pipeline runs through the Straits of Mackinac and is over 60 years old.
