Escanaba Public Safety officers are concerned about a wave of crank calls in the city. They appear to come from local numbers. When answered, a computer-generated voice invites the call recipient to press a number to learn about lowering credit card interest rates. However, when the number is pressed, it connects to a live person who makes sexually obscene comments. Officials encourage you to hang up immediately anytime you receive an automated call about credit card interest rates. Another phone scammer has been calling students at Northern Michigan University, claiming to have a warrant for the student’s arrest for tax evasion. Real tax officials never deliver such information by phone.
