Petitions Filed Against Wolf Hunt

Opponents of Michigan’s wolf hunt filed petitions with state elections officials in Lansing yesterday to put the most recent law allowing wolf hunting on the November ballot. If the petitions are found sufficient, they would suspend the current law that allowed the Natural Resources Commission to designate wolves as a game animal and set the first hunt this fall. Hunters took 23 wolves during the hunt. Jill Fritz, director of Keep Michigan Wolves Protected says they are close to their goal of 225,000 valid signatures. She says she’s confident the public will understand the facts behind ending the hunt.

Meanwhile, hunt supporters are gathering signatures on a petition initiative that reinforce the NRC’s ability to designate game species and issue fisheries orders. The group has until May 20 to submit more than 250,000 valid signatures.
