Peters Backs National Criminal Justice Commission Proposal

Michigan’s junior U-S Senator is joining with Senate Republican leaders in calling for a National Criminal Justice Commission to look into the root causes for recent civil unrest and rising tensions between police and civilians.

U-S Senator Gary Peters, a Detroit Democrat, is co-sponsoring legislation to create a bi-partisan commission, to undertake a comprehensive review of the nation’s criminal justice system, something that has not been done in 50 years.

He says the panel will be made up of experts from law enforcement, victims rights, civil liberties and social services which will be charged with conducting an 18-month review of areas including community-police relations and the grand jury and prison systems.

Peters says the lack of such a review could be behind some of the recent unrest in Ferguson, Missouri; New York City; South Carolina; Baltimore, Maryland, and even Inkster, Michigan.

The legislation creating the new commission was introduced on Tuesday.
