Pedestrian Killed In Early Morning Accident

The pedestrian killed on 6-11-16 is Charles Joseph Maki, 44, of L’Anse.  The Michigan State Police Calumet Port is continuing to investigate the accident.

Michigan State Police from the Calumet Post have released additional information regarding the vehicle-pedestrian accident in L’Anse Township that claimed the life of a 44-year-old L’Anse man.

Police say two vehicles were traveling northbound on Second Sands Beach Road in a foggy unlit area near Pequaming Road around 3:30 a.m. Saturday. The first vehicle, driven by a 19-year-old L’Anse resident, swerved to miss a man lying in the roadway. The second vehicle, driven by a 20-year-old Baraga man, was unable to miss the man lying on the road and struck him.

Police say the driver immediately stopped, called 911, and stayed on the scene to provide assistance. It is unknown why the deceased was lying in the roadway. No names are being released at this time. Investigation into the incident continues.

An early morning accident in Baraga County has claimed the life of a L’Anse man.

At approximately 3:30 a.m. Saturday, troopers from the Michigan State Police Calumet Post responded to a vehicle vs. pedestrian accident on Second Sand Beach Road near Pequaming Road in L’Anse Township. Police say a pedestrian lying in the road was struck by a passing motorist.

The pedestrian, a 44-year-old L’Anse man, was pronounced dead at the scene. His name is not being released at this time.

The accident is still under investigation.
