This week’s warmer weather means the ice is starting to come off the Great Lakes.
MLive Chief Meteorologist Mark Torregrossa says ice cover has decreased in the last eight days from peak ice at almost 89% to 78.5% Monday. Since the peak has probably been reached, Great Lakes ice fell short of last year’s peak ice cover of 92%.
The east side of Lake Michigan is opening up from St. Joseph north to Traverse City. The north end of Lake Ontario has opened up too, with the ice already coming off from Toronto over towards Niagara Falls.
A year ago there was still 91% ice cover on the entire Great Lakes system. All of the Great Lakes except Lake Ontario still had over 90% ice cover at this point last year.
This year only Lake Superior is at 90% ice-covered.
