Orientation Week Continues For Michigan Tech Students

Orientation Week for Michigan Tech is taking place this week.  Here are some of the highlights.

• Reading as Inquiry author Barbara Demick, Tuesday, Aug. 25,  9-11 am and 1-3 pm, Rozsa Center. Her book, required reading for all first-year students, traces the everyday lives and challenges of six North Koreans.

• Blizzard T. Husky scavenger hunt, Tuesday, Aug. 25, 6-8:30 pm, Van Pelt and Opie Library. Here’s the story: Blizzard built a fantastic rocket ship for a research trip to Mars, but on launch day, his old nemisis, Wildcat Willy from Northern Michigan University, stole 9 key pieces to sabotage the trip and left them scattered throughout the library. New students search for them, with the winner receiving tickets to the Tech-NMU hockey game Oct. 24.

• Skateboard tournament sponsored by the Michigan Tech Ski and Snowboard Club, Thursday, Aug. 27, 1-3 pm between the Chemical Science Building and the EERC.

• Walk on water, make liquid nitrogen ice cream, puncture a balloon without popping it. Michigan Tech Mind Trekkers demonstrate the magic and mysteries of science, Thursday, Aug. 27, 2-5 pm on the lawn in front of WalkerArts & Humanities Center.

• Giant banana split, Friday, Aug. 28, 6-7 pm on the sidewalk in front of Douglass Houghton Hall.  A Michigan Tech tradition, more than 500 feet of bananas, ice cream, chocolate sauce and whipped cream.
