Organizations and Advocates Calling on Congress to Renew Child Nutrition Act

Organizations and advocates are urging Congress to reauthorize child nutrition bills.

The Child Nutrition Act funds all federal nutrition programs, including the School Breakfast, National School Lunch, and Summer Food programs.

It’s is up for reauthorization at the end of September.

Linda Teeter of Michigan Citizen Action says the act provides food to thousands of children in Michigan.

She says it’s important the act is renewed to ensure those at-risk kids continue to get food.

John Austin of the Michigan Board of Education says kids that have access to food are more successful at school so ensuring they are fed will get them on the right path and a chance at a good start in life.

Ricky Wright of the Greater Lansing YMCA says the YMCA served over 30,000 meals and snacks to Lansing area kids last year through federal child nutrition programs.

He says if the act is renewed they could have an even greater impact on the community.
