Ordinance Amendment and Construction Updates from Houghton City Council

The Houghton City Council amended ordinance 2017-284 last night at their regularly scheduled meeting. Ordinance 2017-284 regulates residential off-street parking.

The new addition to the ordinance states if a parking area is not on a hard surface, then the parking area must have distinct separation from the non-parking area.

If residents park on gravel or grass, it must be obvious which area is used just for parking.

The addition also states that rental properties remain subject to the hard-surface parking lot construction requirements already being enforced.

Two Houghton city construction project bids were approved at last night’s meeting.

Robert E. Johnson Contracting won the bid for the Subway Deck Repairs for $46,256.

Their numbers came in lower than the estimated cost, according to City Manager Eric Waara.

The Michigan Department of Transportation, through the city, bid out the mill and pacing of College Avenue from Pearl Street to west of Prospect Street.

Payne and Dolan Inc. out of Gladstone will complete the project in four work days before September 20th of this year.

In both instances, the winning bids were the only bids.

The Lakeshore Drive project is running a bit behind.

Waara said that because of the rain the area has experienced recently and the extra work they have been asked to do, Ebert Construction has been granted a three-week extension.

The construction should be wrapped up by September 30th.
