The Holidays can be tough for U.S. Troops and veterans. Operation Christmas Card U.P. invited the community to sign cards and send holiday cheer over seas.
The event was started last year by Kelly Gast, a local daycare provider. Only one person attended the first event, but this year the two decided to work as a team
Gast said, “She’s helping me get hundreds of people here and hopefully have thousands of cards signed. So far today we’ve had many students just drop in and sign cards. Some that didn’t even know the event was going on but happy to sign a card. Families that have heard it on the radio station and news. Little kids come in to come in to color cards and sign them.”
Some student organizations found this event a great way to fill required service hours.
Michigan Tech dining services even donated cookies and coffee to the card signers.
The gathering had such a good turnout this year that Gast is already planning for next Christmas.
Gast said, “We’re a keeping a tally mark of how many people show up and we’ll count up all the cards afterward so we can have a bigger goal for next year.”
Events like these are the perfect way to get into the holiday spirit.
