Ontonagon Community Health Center Welcomes Dr. Andrew Gurien

ONTONAGON, MI – Upper Great Lakes Family Health Center (UGL) welcomes Andrew Gurien, MD, to their team of providers at the Ontonagon Community Health Center.  With more than 10 years of experience Dr. Gurien is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine with additional certifications in Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) and Basic Life Support (BLS).

Dr. Gurien is looking forward to practicing in a rural community like Ontonagon where he will be able to take a traditional approach to medicine.

“I like the north woods,” said Dr. Gurien.  “If I am going to have winter, I would like to have it feel like a real winter.”  This winter, he looks forward to spending time outdoors enjoying nature through cross country skiing, walking or hiking the areas many trails.   Dr. Gurien also enjoys gardening, horticulture, history, travel, adventure and friends.

Dr. Gurien received his MD from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, MN.  He went on to complete his residency at University of Massachusetts’ Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield, MA.  After residency, Dr. Gurien spent time practicing medicine in several areas including Alaska, where he practiced rural medicine and worked with Indian Health Services.

Prior to working in the medical field, Dr. Gurien has experience working for the USDA Forest Service and Arrco Oil Company in Alaska.  He lists among his accomplishments being among the first 25 people to complete hiking the entire Appalachian Trail.
