Oil Spill Drill in Straits Successful

A recently released study by the University of Michigan finds the Straits of Mackinac would be the worst possible place for a Great Lakes oil spill.

Hundreds of people took part in a drill this week to test that.

Ed Golder of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources believes the drill simulating a pipe burst of Enbridge Energy’s Line 5 through the Straits involving the DNR, Enbridge, the Coast Guard and more went well.

Charlie Usher of Enbridge contractor Marine Pollution Control Corporation out of Detroit says if there ever was a spill — over time — the area would recover.

An Enbridge pipeline burst in Calhoun County in 2010, sending hundreds of thousands of gallons of crude oil into the Kalamazoo River.
