Obituary: Margaret Rantanen

Margaret Ann (Dahlgren) Rantanen, age 87, of Mohawk, Michigan passed away peacefully on June 20, 2023 at Gardenview Assisted Living in Calumet, Michigan. She was surrounded by her loving husband and daughters. Margaret was born on October 16, 1935 in Mohawk, Michigan to Wagner and Helen (Erkkila) Dahlgren.

Margaret graduated from Calumet High School in Calumet, Michigan in 1953. She met the love of her life, Henry Rantanen and they were married in 1956. Prior to raising her three daughters, Margaret worked for the Corvette Division of General Motors.

Margaret was a strong and loving lady who always saw the best in people. Her children and grandchildren often sought out her compassionate wisdom. Margaret truly never met a stranger. She loved to visit with family and friends and enjoyed playing Bingo.

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents Wagner and Helen (Erkkila) Dahlgren and her sister Barbara (Dahlgren) O’Brien.

Margaret is survived by her husband Henry; daughters Lisa (Dave) Sabo, Judy (George) Thomas, and Karen Shields (Mike Shields); brothers John (Jackie) and Tom (Julene); grandchildren Kelly Thomas-Morrison (Jason), Angie Thomas-Southwell (Sean), Bryan Sabo, Julianne (Justin) Fittonneville; Christopher, Thomas, Michael, and Henry Shields; great-grandchildren Katey, Abby, Jason, Jr., and Elijah; and many much-loved nieces, nephews and friends.

A service for Margaret will be held at Erickson-Crowley-Peterson Funeral Home in Calumet, Michigan on Monday, June 26th at 11:00 am with visitation prior from 10:00 – 11:00 am, officiated by Pastor Mark Halonen of Fulton Apostolic Lutheran Church. After the service, burial will take place at Pine Grove Cemetery in Eagle Harbor, Michigan followed by a luncheon at Siskiwit Reception Hall in Calumet.
