Evelyn L. Olson, 93, a former resident of Misery Bay passed away Wednesday, January 11, 2023, at the Woodland Haven of Canal View — Houghton County where she had been a resident.
She was born on April 24, 1929, in Misery Bay, MI, a daughter of the late Nestor and Anna (Autio) Maki. Evelyn was raised in Misery Bay and attended the Misery Bay and Jeffers Schools.
Evelyn left school early to help work on the family farm. She then moved to the Detroit area to work as a housekeeper for a few years. She also worked at the Toivola Lunch for many years as a cook, waitress and cashier.
On March 13, 1948, she was united in marriage to Stuart Olson. The couple resided in the home they built in Misery Bay, where they raised their family. After almost 70 years together, Stuart preceded Evelyn in death on November 25, 2018.
Mrs. Olson was a member of the Range Apostolic Lutheran Church of South Range. She had a passion for knitting and helped make hundreds of mittens and socks with her church, that were sent to different missions in northern Europe. She also enjoyed knitting sweaters for her children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Evelyn was a longtime volunteer for Little Brother’s Friends of the Elderly. She also enjoyed tracing her family roots and was proud to have taken a trip to Finland to help research the Olson and Maki family trees.
Preceding her in death were her husband, her parents and her brothers and sisters.
Surviving are:
Her children: Mike (Nancy) Olson of Misery Bay, & Ren (Paul Hunter) Olson of Baltic.
Her grandsons: Brooks (Lindsay) Olson and Brady (Kelly) Olson
Her great-grandchildren: Ahriana, Isabelle, Lynola, Edith and Stuart.

A memorial service for Evelyn will be held 2:00 pm Monday, January 16, 2023, at the Range Apostolic Lutheran Church of South Range with Pastor Ernest Bylkas and Rev. Bucky Beach to officiate. Spring burial will be in the Toivola Cemetery.
Friends may call on Monday, January 16, 2023, from 1:00 pm until time of services at the Range Apostolic Lutheran Church.
In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, the family suggests memorial contributions be given to the Range Apostolic Lutheran Church or Little Brother’s Friends of the Elderly.
