Obituary: Dennis Robert Mayotte

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Dennis Robert Mayotte, age 75, of Medford, who peacefully entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, July 9, 2024, at Aspirus Hospital in Wausau. Dennis was born on July 15, 1948, in Hancock, Mich., to Robert and Edna (Moilanen) Mayotte. Dennis’s story is truly one of resilience and the importance of family support. Faced with the challenge early in life, losing his mother at a young age of two his uncle and aunt, Joseph and Lucille Brost, played a significant role in his life during a challenging time when his father was faced with health issues. Their love and care provided a stable and nurturing environment for Dennis as he stayed with them until his father’s recovery. During this period, Dennis attended Holy Rosary Catholic School and Medford High School, where he formed lasting connections and memories. Dennis also found the love and support in his father’s later marriage to his stepmother, Lorraine.

Dennis proudly served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War from 1966 to 1970, achieving the rank of sergeant in the Strategic Air Command with 307 Field Maintenance Squadron in U-Tapao, Thailand. After his military service, Dennis pursued various career paths, working as a mechanic at the Great Lakes, selling insurance at John Hancock, and later transitioning to the White Pine Mine in Upper Michigan.

Dennis met his wife Kay Lannet in Bruce Crossing, Mich., at the VFW. They dated and were married at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Medford on Nov. 8, 1975. Dennis and his beloved wife, Kay raised five children in Medford. Dennis dedicated many years to Phillips Plastics and worked for Weather Shield for 20 years. While working and raising a family, he was determined to pursue higher education at UW-Eau Claire, earning a bachelor’s degree in Journalism with a minor in History.

Dennis was actively involved in the community, serving as the Post Commander of the Medford VFW Post 5729 and District Commander of the 10th District. He was active for many years serving in different positions. He enjoyed being a member and met many people in the community. Dennis’s involvement in Memorial Day ceremonies at the Millpond not only showcased his public speaking abilities but also highlighted his deep sense of patriotism and his desire to honor the memory of those who served their country. His contributions to these ceremonies were a testament to his reverence for the military and his dedication to commemorating the sacrifices of those who gave their lives for their nation.

Dennis’s love for conversations and his ability to be a compassionate listener and confidant undoubtedly made him a cherished friend and family member. He enjoyed a wide range of passions, from reading and writing to music, photography, art, history, auto mechanics, and wood carving which showcased his creativity and curiosity for life.

During the summer months, Dennis found solace and joy in the great outdoors, particularly through camping trips in the Upper Peninsula. The time spent camping in the UP was not only a chance for Dennis to relax and rejuvenate but also a special time for gathering with loved ones. Friends and family would come together to share in the beauty of the natural surroundings, strengthening their bonds and creating cherished moments together. The memories created during these camping trips and visits with loved ones will continue to be treasured by all who had the privilege of sharing in these special moments with Dennis.

Dennis is lovingly remembered by his wife, Kay of Medford; children, Michael Dennis, Matthew Robert, Jeremy Joseph and Jamie Marie; siblings, Alyce (Allan) Hoffman, Kathy (Michael) Dube, Robert (Karen) Mayotte; in-laws, Ed Lannet, Judy Lannet, Ernie (Lisa) Lannet, John (Gail) Lannet, Doris Dallas; grandchildren, Hannah, Cameron (Chanita), Cody, Connor, Quentin, Adalynn, and Payton; great-grandchildren Elijah, Elilah, Eliam, and Carter; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and stepmother; father and mother-in-law, Einar and Elsie Lannet; son, Jesse in 2008; in-laws, Linda, Clara, Kenneth and Robert Lannet and Herb Dallas.

A memorial service honoring Dennis’s life will take place at 11 a.m., on Friday, July 19, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, officiated by Father Patrick McConnell. Military honors will be rendered by the Medford Area Military Honors Team. Interment will be at Holy Rosary Catholic Cemetery where Dennis will be laid to rest next to his son Jesse.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m., Friday at the church.

As we honor and remember Dennis during his memorial service, we will hold onto the memories and his vibrant spirit and the joy he brought to those around him. May his legacy of love, compassion, and enthusiasm for life continue to inspire all who knew him. Dennis will be deeply missed and forever cherished in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him.
