Nursing moms invited to ‘Big Latch On’ event at Aspirus Houghton Clinic to help break world record

HOUGHTON, Michigan (July 29, 2015) – Nursing moms are invited to get together with other moms at Aspirus Houghton Clinic, Saturday, August 1, to help break the world record for the most women breastfeeding simultaneously.

The “Big Latch On” event is being hosted by Aspirus Women’s Health Team and takes place in the private Outpatient Therapies room at the Houghton clinic. Sign-in is at 10 a.m. Participation is free.

The Big Latch On is a global, community-building event held every August to celebrate World Breastfeeding Week.

It involves groups of breastfeeding women coming together at registered locations around the world to all “latch on” (breastfeed) their child or children at the same time. At 10:30 a.m., children latch on for one minute.

A worldwide total is collected from each registered location, with the goal of beating the previous year’s number of children breastfeeding.

In 2014, there were 13,798 children breastfeeding across 826 locations, in 31 countries.

The first Big Latch On was held in New Zealand in 2005. Founded by Women’s Health Action, the Big Latch On is a targeted community development initiative that raises awareness of the benefits of breastfeeding, encourages the formation of support networks between breastfeeding women, and aims to normalize breastfeeding as a part of daily life.

Participants are asked to arrive at 10 a.m. in order to settle in before the 10:30 a.m. start time. Organizers are bringing along brunch snacks, party favors and fun coloring pages for the older kids to enjoy during the event.

Aspirus Houghton Clinic is located at 1000 Cedar St., next to Country Inn & Suites behind Walmart. For more information about the Big Latch On, visit http://biglatchon.org/.
