Northern MI Storms Damage Apple & Cherry Crops

The 100 mile an hour winds and large hail that accompanied Sunday night’s storms in northwest Michigan took a toll on farmer’s apple and sweet cherry crops.

Nikki Rothwell, an educator with Michigan State University Extension, says wind-whipped apples were bruised and others pockmarked by hail.

She suspects the bruised apples could still be used to make juice but those cratered are torn apart by hail aren’t marketable.

The wind scattered sweet cherries across some fields while hail may have bruised those that clung to their tree.

Rothwell says the timing of the storm is heartbreaking for apple farmers who are just two months away from harvest.
