You couldn’t vote absentee without giving a reason in Michigan leading up to today’s election but one state lawmakers hopes voters will be able to in March.
State Representative Lisa Posthumus Lyons is sponsoring the bill and says she’s been talking to those opposed over the last few months to explain what the bill does – and doesn’t.
The legislation had a hearing in a committee she chairs months ago but has sat dormant ever since.
Under the measure, people could vote absentee without giving a reason by visiting their local clerk’s office, showing their ID and filling out an application.
Right now in Michigan registered voters can only vote absentee if they are 60 years old or older, planning on being out of town on Election Day or are in jail.
