No Privatization for Houghton County Medical Care Facility

The Houghton County Medical Care Facility will not be privatized.

A large crowd of concerned citizens attended the regular meeting of the Houghton County Board of Commissioners Tuesday after rumors circulated that the board was considering the option.

Commissioner Eugene Londo asked how the rumor got started and that was partially answered by Commissioner Anton Pintar, who said some board members had private discussions on the topic.

Those board members were not named, though Commissioner Tim Palosaari had previously expressed a desire to discuss the fairness of the facility receiving both private and public funds.

The board briefly discussed the issue in February’s regular meeting only to assure those attending that they were not considering it.

Board Chair Al Koskela said privatization was never on the table.

The board approved a motion to put the millage renewal for the Houghton County Medical Care Facility on the August 2nd ballot.

The renewal would be at 2.55310 mills for six years.

The motion passed 4-0 with Commissioner Tim Palosaari absent.

In other business, the board voted to move forward with the renovation and expansion of the Houghton County Jail kitchen.

The board also adopted a new county seal.
