NMU Football Player Found Dead

MARQUETTE — A Northern Michigan University student passed away in his dorm room Tuesday morning.

In a statement, NMU President Dr. Fritz Erickson announced that Sophomore Anthony Herbert of Lapeer, Mich., passed away suddenly in his residence hall room.

“Anthony was a construction management major and a member of the Wildcat football team. What caused his passing is unknown at this time and right now our concern is for Anthony’s family, friends, teammates, coaches and team staff, teachers and fellow students,” said Erickson.

According to the NMU Student Directory, Herbert resided at Spaulding Hall. NMU Assistant Vice President of University Marketing and Communications Derek Hall tells ABC 10 that Herbert suffered a sudden medical emergency.

NMU Public Safety is in charge of the incident. An autopsy will be performed by a medical examiner to determine an exact cause of death.

“Northern is providing counseling services to those impacted who need help to deal with this loss. We will be talking with Anthony’s family on their wishes regarding memorial/funeral services and will keep the campus informed as those details become available. If Anthony was a part of your life, the university community and I offers our deepest sympathy and prayers to you at this time. Anthony will be missed by many,” Erickson added.
