There is a new statewide test for students in Michigan beginning this week.
The M-STEP test is more challenging than the former MEAP test that had been given to students. The M-STEP is also the first exam to be online.
Students in grades five, eight and eleven are taking the test.
Officials say the test will focus on language and math for those in third and eighth grades, while science will be the focus on those in fourth and seventh grades.
Social studies will also be assessed for those in the fifth and eighth grades.
